Cloud metrics can help an organization detect anomalies before they lead to downtime. These metrics are also important because they can help a company obtain a deeper understanding of their cloud spend and how to improve overall user experience.
Several different types of metrics can be used to assess the performance and security of a cloud-based system. Security metrics, for example, measure the effectiveness of security measures within a cloud environment. Performance metrics show the speed and effectiveness of services, while cost metrics inform a business about cloud-related spend.
Here are some common metrics IT pros use to manage and monitor their cloud workflows:
- Latency: The time, or delay, it takes between the time a request is sent until a response is received.
- Error rates: The proportion of failed requests or outcomes to the total number of requests. It is often used as an indicator of an application’s reliability.
- CPU usage: A metric that quantifies how much of a CPU’s total resources is being used to process an activity at any given time.
- Mean time to repair (MTTR): The average time needed to repair a failed system or device.
